WHAT BEER CANADA DOES

Bringing brewers, communities, and businesses together in one positive voice.

We are the national inclusive voice advocating on behalf of and for Canadian brewers and adult beer consumers and all those that rely on our grains-to-glass added value agri-food supply chain.

Canadians are rightly proud of our nation’s great brewing expertise, history, and heritage. Beer Canada was born in 1943 as the Dominion Brewers Association. Today, Beer Canada continues to ensure the adoption of a responsible regulatory and tax environment at all levels of government in support of domestic beer manufacturing, sales, distribution, and consumption.

HISTORY OF CANADIAN BEER

Canada’s early days as a brewing nation saw its brewers working in their own homes, brewing for enjoyment and to celebrate special occasions. A Jesuit brother,

Brother Ambroise, was the country’s first recorded brewer, and he began making beer in 1646 following the founding of New France.

By 1688, New France’s Intendant Jean Talon had founded the country’s first commercial brewery in Quebec City to reduce the colony’s dependence on imported brandy, selling beer to the West Indies and becoming one of “Canada’s” first commercial exports.

RESPONSIBLE USE

Most Canadians who choose to drink beer do so responsibly. We value the role of education and knowledge in ensuring consumers are empowered to make responsible choices regarding alcohol consumption throughout their lives. As alcohol producers, we have a responsibility to manufacture and promote our products in a responsible manner, ensuring that we do not encourage excessive consumption or access by the underaged. We actively endorse the advocacy of effective and targeted public policies, as well as meaningful communication with various partners and stakeholders, to further promote responsible alcohol consumption.
